MEWINA Holds Consultation Workshops (Libya)In the presence of Eng. AbuBakr El Amin, and other high officials of the Ministry of Water Resources, Libya’s Ministry of Water Resources organized its national Consultation Workshop on June 9th, 2013. The Regional Project Management Unit, represented by the Regional Coordinator, the Rapid Assessment Consultants and assessors, the Libyan AMCOW TAC member, the national coordination team, National M&E Specialist, the National Task Force members and other stakeholders discussed the findings of the Rapid Assessment of Monitoring and Evaluation Systems and Water Indicators; namely the draft national RA Report of Libya, the draft RA transboundary Groundwater Report of North Western Sahara Aquifer System (NWSAS), the draft RA transboundary Groundwater Report of Nubian Sandstone Aquifer System (NSAS), and the AMCOW Report.

ShMILE-2 Capacity Building Programme 26 May 2013-ongoing, Alexandria – Egypt

CEDARE launched the ShMILE-2 Capacity Building Programme as part of the activities of the ShMILE-2 project,shmile on 26 May 2013 in Alexandria, Egypt. The objective of the programme is to provide technical assistance to touristic accommodation establishments towards qualifying for application to the EU Ecolabel certification, through providing training to professionals in the tourism sector. The training courses are aimed at introducing the principles of environmental management, necessary for certification, based on EMAS and ISO criteria.

MEWINA Holds Consultation Workshops (Algeria)Algeria’s Ministry of Water Resources organized its national Consultation Workshop on May 25th, 2013. It was attended by the Regional Project Management Unit, represented by the Regional Coordinator, the Rapid Assessment Consultants and assessors who met with the Algerian AMCOW TAC member, the national coordination team, National M&E Specialist, the National Task Force members and other stakeholders. It aimed at discussing the findings of the Rapid Assessment of Monitoring and Evaluation Systems and Water Indicators; namely the draft national RA Report of Algeria, the draft RA transboundary Groundwater Report of North Western Sahara Aquifer System (NWSAS), and the AMCOW Report as well.

The workshop objective was to verify data and indicators at the national level and to reach an agreed upon set of water sector indicators which will contribute to the preparation of the periodical national State of the Water Report, and hence, the sub-regional and regional SOW Reports.

empaThe Centre for Environment and Development for the Arab Region and Europe (CEDARE) together with the Swiss Federal Laboratories for Material Sciences and Technology (Empa) are launching the Swiss programme on ‘Sustainable Recycling Industries (SRI)’. The event is organised as a side-event to the SWEEP-Net 3rd Regional Forum on Integrated Solid Waste Management in the MENA region, on 15th May 2013 at Cairo Marriott Hotel, Egypt.
