Cooperation with the Electronic Research Institute (ERI)

ERI, was established by the Presidential Decree No. 38 in 1989. It is one of the specialized institutes affiliated to the Ministry of Scientific Research. The activities of ERI include theoretical and applied research in the fields of electronics, communications, computers, and informatics. Catering scientific consultancy services to the industrial sector, for both production and services. Currently, ERI constitutes seven departments that include more than two hundred research members to be one of the largest research entities in Egypt.

The research institute provides technical training, operation management training and technical labs for researchers use and incubation hub for entrepreneurs.

Cooperation with the Ministry of Higher Education

Two meetings were convened with the Ministry of Higher Education, one was online and the second at the premises of the Ministry.  CEDARE indicated the importance of training that the project provided in the first phase and how it was targeting new ventures and starting an e-waste recycling business. Additionally, the importance of institutionalizing the SRI training to sustain education in this field and how it started with institutions within the MCIT in the form of a course but then the idea developed into greater depth and into making it part of electronic education within universities. It was highlighted the opportunity of having Egypt as E-waste recycling hub for the African and Arab countries which will need high level calibers in this important industry.

Support to Formal E-waste Recyclers

The SRI project, funded by the Swiss Government who signed an agreement with the Ministry of Communication & Information Technology (MCIT), are working under the presidential initiative of digital transformation to utilize e-waste recycling primary to refurbish used equipment that would serve the initiative in-line with safe recycling of e-waste concept through utilizing the premises of Silicon Waha which is a private company owned by MCIT.

“Bus Systems & Energy Transition: Socially Responsible Shifts Towards Cleaner Buses in Egypt” Roundtable

On December 8th, 2022, the UN-HABITAT Egypt Country Office hosted and co-organized in cooperation with CEDARE & FES Egypt Office a roundtable workshop titled “Bus Systems & Energy Transition: Socially Responsible Shifts Towards Cleaner Buses in Egypt”. The meeting brought together experts and key players in the public transport industry, specifically Bus Systems, for the aim of discussing Egypt’s aligning plans with the global commitments announced at the COP27 as well as the post COP updates and recommendations and how to translate them into actions in 2023. Participants included experts and executives from the Ministry of Transport, public authorities, private sector representing bus manufacturers, service providers, local operators, battery chargers’ manufacturers/assemblers, and consultants.

“Climate Finance for Energy Transition in Egypt” A High-Level Policy Dialogue by CEDARE & FES Egypt Office

Since capital deployment to drive energy transition and green financing have to take place NOW, a high-level policy dialogue on “Climate Finance for Energy Transition in Egypt” took place in Cairo on 4 December 2022. The session was co-organized by CEDARE’s Sustainable Growth Programme & FES-Egypt Office and came as part of their collaboration in a series of high-level sessions for strengthening mechanisms of policy dialogue among stakeholders pre and post COP27.

Egypt’s Energy Transition.. Whereto? A High-Policy Dialogue organized by CEDARE & FES

In light of climate change mitigation and in conjunction with Egypt hosting the COP27, the Centre for Environment and Development for the Arab Region and Europe (CEDARE) in partnership with Friedrich Ebert Stiftung (FES)-Egypt Office held today a high-level policy dialogue on “Energy Transition in Egypt”, in collaboration with the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources and the Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy in Egypt.
