Dr. Khaled AbuZeid, Water Expert and Senior Regional Water Resources Programme Manager, CEDARE has participated in the event of the BioVision Alexandria (BVA) Organizing Committee regarding their ninth biennial conference BVA 2018. The BVA 2018 Conference took place at the Library of Alexandria (Bibliotheca Alexandrina), Egypt, from 20 to 22 April 2018.
Dr. AbuZeid presented a presentation on "Water Prospects in the 21st Century Arab Region Perspectives on the Water SDG 6"
The theme of BVA 2018 is “New Life Sciences: Towards SDGs”. The conference highlighted the important role science plays with regard to achieving SDGs. More insights on the science-based-decisions-making was introduced, and how this affects the developing world. Furthermore, within the framework of BVA 2018, the first conference was launched on “Robotics and Bio-robotics in Life Sciences” in the Bibliotheca Alexandrina.
In the session organized on "Ecosystems, Wetlands and Sustainable Development in the Arab Region" on March 22nd, 2018 at the 8th World Water Forum in Brasilia, CEDARE, joined speakers from Egypt, Iraq, the League of Arab States, RAED, and the Arab Water Council in sharing their experience and views on the topic. CEDARE Water Resources Director, Khaled AbuZeid, indicated that Wetlands and Ecosystems are gaining attention through the RAMSAR Convention, the Nature-Based Solutions 2018 World Water Development Report, indicators in the Arab State of the Water Report by CEDARE and AWC, SDG 15 and SDG 6.6 which has a 2020 Target which is earlier than other SDGs that have targets in 2030.
Khaled AbuZeid, CEDARE Water Resources Director, indicated during the panel discussion jointed by Brazil, SIWI, and Nepal on "Water as a Human Right" which was held on March 20th, 2018 at the 8th World Water Forum in Brazil, that water Scarcity, vulnerability and risks to transboundary waters, political unrest, war, terrorism, and human displacements are affecting the human right to water and sanitation in the Arab Region. He added that targeted subsidies, cross subsidies, proper volumetric metering, Public Private Partnership, effective regulators, and responsible consumer services, can enhance the realization of the human right to water and sanitation. "National Constitutions should include human right to Water and Sanitation among citizens’ rights", he alluded to. He said that Wastewater Reuse can provide an opportunity for financing sanitation services.
Joinded by representatives from Sudan, Lebanon, Kuwait, Arab Water Council and the league of Arab States, in a session on the Water-Energy-Food (WEF) Nexus organized on March 21st, 2018 at the 8th World Water Forum in Brasilia, CEDARE Water Resources Director, Dr. Khaled AbuZeid, indicated in his presentation on the Water Energy Food Nexus in the Arab Region that the Arab Countries import about 340 Billion Cubic Meters of Virtual Water embedded in their food imports. He concluded his speech by recommending that Policy decisions that are to be made in any of the water security, energy security, or food security fields should not be done in isolation but rather within a nexus approach. He concluded that WEF Nexus should consider the fit-for-purpose water use, the long term implications of using fossil reserves, the transboundary dimension of the WEF Nexus, the green water comparative advantage for food production, the optimization of virtual water trade, the measures needed to reduce food wastage, water wastage, and energy wastage, and the trade-offs between increasing water efficiency, increasing water recycling, and the corresponding energy needs.
CEDARE organized a session on the "Mediterranean Climate Change Adaptation & Mitigation" on March 20th, 2018 during the 8th World Water Forum held in Brazil. The session was inagurated by a speech of Prince Albert II of Monaco. The sessions included speakers from CEDARE, Monaco, France, Spain, Palestine, and the Arab Water Council. CEDARE Water Director indicated that the session concluded that: National Laws and Legislations should embrace water related Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation measures, The Water Community need to communicate with the Climate Change Community, Water Management authorities and operators at all levels are encouraged to monitor their water and energy consumptions, in addition to water losses and leakages, and implement measures for adaptation and mitigation.
