On December 4th, 2016, UN Environment Regional Office for West Asia (ROWA) in cooperation with Center for Environment and Development for the Arab Region and Europe (CEDARE) held a networking event for the members of the League of Arab States Joint Committee for Environment and Development in the Arab Region (JCEDAR) in Cairo. The event, held in a friendly dinner setting, also gathered experts in the field who are interested in promotion of cleaner fuels and improved air quality.
Welcoming speeches and key messages were delivered by Dr Iyad Abumoghli, Regional Director for West Asia and Middle East Region of UN Environment, and Dr. Hossam Allam, Regional Programme Manager, Sustainable Growth Programme of CEDARE, and the event objectives were also reiterated by Dr. Fareed Bushehry of UN Environment ROWA in his speech.
The key items highlighted in the speeches and throughout the event were as follows:
- The Air Quality mandate of UN and activities in the transport sector, in particular to promote low Sulphur-reduction in fuels as well as other pollutants and greenhouse gases.
- A reminder of the PCFV campaign as well as the necessary tandem work in vehicle efficiency and air pollution and climate change (the GFEI campaign and CCAC), with reference to a brochure distributed about PCFV.
- Call for action: Participants were reminded about the need to adopt the LAS Sulphur reduction strategy at a national level, whereas the PCFV network is available for such support through CEDARE and UN Environment.
- A brief handout with a summary of key messages of the League of Arab States strategy report for reduction of Sulphur in fuels (LAS fuel quality roadmap) was distributed.
In the speeches, Dr. Iyad also noted some good examples of success stories elsewhere around the world for encouragement, such as multiple cities that plan to phase out the use of diesel powered vehicles in their streets entirely; Paris, Madrid, Mexico, and Athens.
Throughout the dinner discussions, with the help of CEDARE members at different tables, other messages about the UNEP's activities were also delivered and discussed. Other attendees included Dr. Medhat Yousef, the lead author of LAS fuel quality roadmap and former Vice Chairman of the Egyptian General Petroleum Company (EGPC), Ms. Nurfarahislinda, the Communications Manager of the Asian Cleaner Fuels Association (ACFA), Dr. Hanan El-Hadary, the Director of the Egyptian National Cleaner Production Center (ENCPC), and Dr. Khaled El-Adly, the Vice President of International Society of City & Regional Planners (ISOCARP) and ex-governor of Giza governorate in Egypt, who have all greatly enriched the discussions, together with the members of JCEDAR.
