As part of the SWITCH project being implemented by CEDARE in Alexandria, an agreement has been signed between CEDARE and the Alexandria Water Company to implement measures of Integrated Urban Water Management (IUWM) in on the informal settlements in Alexandria. Eng. Nadia Abdou, Chairperson of the Alexandria Water Company, indicated that the Water Company is pleased to cooperate with CEDARE in a water savings program in the Fishermen’s Village including the installation of home water savings fittings, as well as in a leak detection and pipe repair program, and in water supply SWITCHing for the Youth Center soccer field from fresh drinking water supply for irrigation to groundwater supply.
The IUWM measures when successfully implemented will serve as a model for water demand management which can be replicated in other areas of Alexandria and provide alternative solutions for satisfying the increasing water demand for Alexandria in the future. Dr. Khaled AbuZeid, who signed the agreement on behalf of Dr. Nadia Makram Ebeid, CEDARE Executive Director, indicated that CEDARE is similarly signing an agreement with the Alexandria Sanitation Company, to implement sanitation measures of IUWM in the same area to improve household connections to sewage networks, and to improve the performance of the sewage network to complete the integrated picture of IUWM in the fishermen’s village. CEDARE is also working with the two companies and all other relevant stakeholders to prepare an Integrated Urban Water Management (IUWM) Strategic Plan for the year 2030 for the whole city of Alexandria, which looks at non-conventional ways of satisfying future water demands of the growing city and the surrounding areas within the governorate.
