ReWater MENA Project

In many parts of the world, there is not enough water to meet growing demand. One promising solution is smart use of water that has already been previously used. Water can be used in cities and reused in agriculture with benefits for all.  Drawing on experience with water reuse strategies already developed in the region, the ReWater MENA project will identify promising innovations and validated reuse.  Under funding from the Swedish SIDA, and the leadership of the International Water Management Institute (IWMI), CEDARE in cooperation with other partners embarked in 2018 on a 4-year project that will help expand the safe reuse of water in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA). CEDARE signs project agreement with African Water Facility for a “MDGs Monitoring and Evaluation for Water in North Africa (MEWINA)” (AFDB-AWF-CEDARE), Duration (2011-2012)

CEDARE signs project agreement with African Water FacilityH.E. Dr. Nadia Makram Ebeid, Executive Director, CEDARE (Centre for Environment & Development for the Arab Region & Europe) singed on January 4th, 2011 a MEWINA project agreement with the African Water Facility at the African Development Bank office in Egypt, for the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) Monitoring & Evaluation Program for the Water in North Africa.  

The project will be regionally coordinated by CEDARE in its capacity as the North African Technical Secretariat of the African Ministerial Council on Water (N-AMCOW).  Phase I of the project which will last for 18 months is expected to harmonize and strengthen the Monitoring & Evaluation capacity in the 6 participating countries of North Africa (Algeria, Egypt, Libya, Morocco, Mauritania, & Tunisia), and enhance national, sub-regional and regional cooperation in exchanging knowledge and information regarding improved water resources management and reliable and effective water services.  The expected direct results of implementing the project activities are:

Support to the European Union Water Initiative Mediterranean Component (MED EUWI), Duration (2011-2012)

EUWIThe Project will give technical support to the MED EUWI Secretariat in the implementation of activities in the framework of the Mediterranean Component of the EU Water Initiative. This is one of the components of the EU Water Initiative launched in 2002. The overall objective of the project is to promote the adoption of IWRM governance principles through their use for the definition and implementation of water management policies and measures, at both national and regional levels. This will be achieved through the implementation of national policy dialogues, support for the Joint Process WFD-MED EUWI and support to the Strategy for Water in the Mediterranean. In this context, the MED EUWI Secretariat will take the lead in planning and establishing the relevant activities with the support of the project and the Project will deliver technical expertise and implement studies and dialogue processes.

Adapting to Climate Change Induced Water Stress in the Nile River Basin (DHI / USGS/UNEP/CEDARE), Duration (2011-2012)

Adapting to Climate Change Induced Water Stress in the Nile River BasinType of services provided:

  • Review available data and information.
  • Agree on a common assessment approach and format of the report on the subject area, including the development of hydrological models for the basin. 
  • Understand temporal and spatial hydrologic dynamics of the Nile and formulate strategies accordingly.
  • Identify critical gaps and come up with strategies for dealing with the gaps.
  • Identify focused working groups and develop a timeframe for these working groups to deliver the key outputs for the project component.

CEDARE signs agreement with Alexandria Water Company under SWITCH Project

CEDARE signs agreement with Alexandria Water Company under SWITCH ProjectAs part of the SWITCH project being implemented by CEDARE in Alexandria, an agreement has been signed between CEDARE and the Alexandria Water Company to implement measures of Integrated Urban Water Management (IUWM) in on the informal settlements in Alexandria.  Eng. Nadia Abdou, Chairperson of the Alexandria Water Company, indicated that the Water Company is pleased to cooperate with CEDARE in a water savings program in the Fishermen’s Village including the installation of home water savings fittings, as well as in a leak detection and pipe repair program, and in water supply SWITCHing for the Youth Center soccer field from fresh drinking water supply for irrigation to groundwater supply.

IUCN-DSS (IUCN-CEDARE), Duration (2007-2010)

IUCN1An agreement was signed between CEDARE and IUCN on July 15, 2007 to produce a project document for implementing system analysis tools to improve water resources management. System tools will be developed to support district managers to assess water needs and to allocate water efficiently within the district. The activities were carried out upon the contract was signed for a duration of 30 months. An amendment to this Memorandum of Understanding was signed on July 15, 2007. An Agreement was signed between CEDARE and IUCN for a project named (System Analysis Tools (DSS)) for improving River Water Management in Selected Districts in Egypt).
