On September 27th, 2023, the Waste Management Regulatory Authority (WMRA)-Ministry of Environment in collaboration with the Centre for Environment and Development for the Arab Region and Europe (CEDARE) held the Consultation Session on Financial Mechanisms to Reduce the Consumption of Single-Use Plastic Bags (SUPB) in Egypt at InterContinental CityStars Hotel, Cairo, in the framework of SwitchMed II Project (Policy Component).

CEDARE Showcases SRI Impact on Egypt at the WRF’23

On 5 September 2023, and as part of the WRF’23 in Geneva, Ms. Ghada Moghny, Senior Programme Coordinator at CEDARE delivered a presentation on the “Sustainable Recycling Industries Impact on Egypt”, as part of the scientific session titled “E-waste frameworks, business models and management”. Adopting the Swiss model: CEDARE conducts TOT on E-waste Recycling Conformity Assessment under SRI

The Sustainable Recycling Industries – SRI Project in Egypt – has organized a 7-days TOT on E-waste Recycling Conformity Assessment in Cairo in June 2023. The training was delivered by experts from DSS and EMPA in Switzerland in collaboration with the SRI Egypt team and aimed at building the capacities of 20 calibers qualifying them to audit Egyptian e-waste recyclers.

SwitchMed Project confers “Plastic Pollution Control” in its first Round Table

“Plastic Pollution Control” was the title of the Round Table on Sustainable Consumption and Production co-convened by CEDARE, WMRA & UNEP on May 9, 2023. As a global priority, Plastic Pollution Control comes as well on top of the Egyptian government’s national agenda today. The Round Table, which was held back-to-back with the Launching event of SwitchMed II Project at Semiramis InterContinental Hotel, Cairo, brought together 85 stakeholders and experts from relevant ministries including the Ministry of Environment, Ministry of Trade & Industry, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Transport, Suez Canal Authority, international developmental organizations, large supermarket chains and big retailers, financial institutions, technology centers, chemical and plastic manufacturers affiliated to the Federation of Egyptian Industries, FMCG manufacturers and retailers and academia. Egypt Launches Phase II of SwitchMed Project (Policy Component)

on 9 May 2023, H.E. Dr. Yasmin Fouad, Egyptian Minister of Environment, launched phase II of SwitchMed Project in Egypt at an exceptional event. The launch was held at Semiramis InterContinental Hotel in Cairo in the presence of the implementing partners: the European Commission represented by Ms. Sylvie Fontaine, Project Officer for Environment & Climate Change; the UNEP remotely represented by Ms. Elisa Tonda, Chief Resources and Markets Branch and Mr. Luc Reuter Programme Officer, Industry & Economy Division, and CEDARE represented by Dr. Hossam Allam, Regional Programme Director for Sustainable Growth and the Waste Management Regulatory Authority (WMRA) represented by its CEO: Dr. Tarek El Araby.

“Bus Systems & Energy Transition: Socially Responsible Shifts Towards Cleaner Buses in Egypt” Roundtable

On December 8th, 2022, the UN-HABITAT Egypt Country Office hosted and co-organized in cooperation with CEDARE & FES Egypt Office a roundtable workshop titled “Bus Systems & Energy Transition: Socially Responsible Shifts Towards Cleaner Buses in Egypt”. The meeting brought together experts and key players in the public transport industry, specifically Bus Systems, for the aim of discussing Egypt’s aligning plans with the global commitments announced at the COP27 as well as the post COP updates and recommendations and how to translate them into actions in 2023. Participants included experts and executives from the Ministry of Transport, public authorities, private sector representing bus manufacturers, service providers, local operators, battery chargers’ manufacturers/assemblers, and consultants.

“Climate Finance for Energy Transition in Egypt” A High-Level Policy Dialogue by CEDARE & FES Egypt Office

Since capital deployment to drive energy transition and green financing have to take place NOW, a high-level policy dialogue on “Climate Finance for Energy Transition in Egypt” took place in Cairo on 4 December 2022. The session was co-organized by CEDARE’s Sustainable Growth Programme & FES-Egypt Office and came as part of their collaboration in a series of high-level sessions for strengthening mechanisms of policy dialogue among stakeholders pre and post COP27.
