UNEP, UNHABITAT & CEDARE release 3 publications on Egypt’s Fuel Efficiency & Economy and Sustainable Urban Mobility

Although the transport sector is one of the main drivers of social and economic development, it is yet a massive energy consumer and source of emission that needs careful investigation. As one of its mandates is to promote sustainable transportation through technical assistance and research, policy advice, capacity building, and awareness-raising together with its national and international partners, CEDARE partnered with UNEP and UNHABITAT to conduct three publications to add to its vast production of thorough studies on Cleaner Fuels and Vehicles and sustainable transportation at large for Egypt as well as for the MENA region. “Bus Systems & Energy Transition: Socially Responsible Shifts Towards Cleaner Buses in Egypt” Roundtable

On December 8th, 2022, the UN-HABITAT Egypt Country Office hosted and co-organized in cooperation with CEDARE & FES Egypt Office a roundtable workshop titled “Bus Systems & Energy Transition: Socially Responsible Shifts Towards Cleaner Buses in Egypt”. The meeting brought together experts and key players in the public transport industry, specifically Bus Systems, for the aim of discussing Egypt’s aligning plans with the global commitments announced at the COP27 as well as the post COP updates and recommendations and how to translate them into actions in 2023. Participants included experts and executives from the Ministry of Transport, public authorities, private sector representing bus manufacturers, service providers, local operators, battery chargers’ manufacturers/assemblers, and consultants.

“Climate Finance for Energy Transition in Egypt” A High-Level Policy Dialogue by CEDARE & FES Egypt Office

Since capital deployment to drive energy transition and green financing have to take place NOW, a high-level policy dialogue on “Climate Finance for Energy Transition in Egypt” took place in Cairo on 4 December 2022. The session was co-organized by CEDARE’s Sustainable Growth Programme & FES-Egypt Office and came as part of their collaboration in a series of high-level sessions for strengthening mechanisms of policy dialogue among stakeholders pre and post COP27.

Egypt’s Energy Transition.. Whereto? A High-Policy Dialogue organized by CEDARE & FES

In light of climate change mitigation and in conjunction with Egypt hosting the COP27, the Centre for Environment and Development for the Arab Region and Europe (CEDARE) in partnership with Friedrich Ebert Stiftung (FES)-Egypt Office held today a high-level policy dialogue on “Energy Transition in Egypt”, in collaboration with the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources and the Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy in Egypt. CEDARE’s 2020 Policy support and training for Sustainable Cities and future plans for air pollution control

As 2020 came to a close, CEDARE in collaboration with FES Egypt celebrated its publication “Mainstreaming Electric Mobility in Egypt: Seeing the bigger picture of sustainable cities“. The training programs revolving around this policy document came at a very relevant time during the COVID-19 pandemic, when one of the major challenges in preventive measures is the provision of transportation alternatives, and remembering that electric mobility is only “a” solution and not “the” solution. Among the key highlights were the reminders that fuel-quality in Egypt is a fundamental prerequisite to cleaner air and parallel planning for walkability and cycling friendliness are essential to the bigger picture of a sustainable city. An introduction to the concepts of Micromobility has also been addressed with reflections on the necessary regulations that must be developed in the coming years.

Training of trainers on sustainable mobility and Low Emission Zones (LEZs)

 

On October and November 2020, CEDARE brought together a group of ten) to individuals whose work involves activism, advocacy or education around sustainable mobility for a TOT facilitated by Dr. Ahmed El-Dorghamy. The training of trainers was designed to provide a contextualized education on sustainable urban mobility and Low Emission Zones (LEZs). The module covered different types of low emission mobility modes including non-motorized mobility (walking and cycling), electric mobility and public transportation.
