CEDARE at the UNESCO International Shared Aquifers Conference

CEDARE at the UNESCO International Shared Aquifers ConferenceThe water resources Programme at CEDARE has participated in the UNESCO International Shared Aquifers Conference that was held in the period from 6-8 December 2010 at the UNESCO headquarters in Paris, France.  CEDARE was represented by Dr. Khaled AbuZeid, Regional Water Program Manager, and Eng. Mohamed Elrawady, Water Resources Specialist.  CEDARE’s representatives contributed with a paper titled “Sustainable Development of Non-renewable Transboundary Groundwater: strategic alternatives for the Nubian sandstone aquifer system” which was well received by the audience when presented by Dr. AbuZeid on the 7th of December.  The conference has enjoyed a huge participation by different research, development and international organizations. The draft UN transboundary aquifers convention has been thoroughly discussed in plenary panel sessions that focused on the factors affecting global acceptance and ratification.  More specific points related to the proposed convention such as “sovereignty “ and “dependence” were discussed in topic themed sessions.
